Summary

The first two books, Childhood and Youth, are about a girl, then a young woman, who aspires to overcome her circumstances and become a writer。 These books are sad, moving, inspiring, sometimes amusing, and interesting for what they say about 20th century Danish history, including during the 1940-45 German occupation。 The third book, Dependency, is a terrifying story of addiction and a doomed marriage; it packs a wallop。 Throughout Ditlevsen writes about herself vividly, frankly, and directly, bu The first two books, Childhood and Youth, are about a girl, then a young woman, who aspires to overcome her circumstances and become a writer。 These books are sad, moving, inspiring, sometimes amusing, and interesting for what they say about 20th century Danish history, including during the 1940-45 German occupation。 The third book, Dependency, is a terrifying story of addiction and a doomed marriage; it packs a wallop。 Throughout Ditlevsen writes about herself vividly, frankly, and directly, but without the excess of self-analysis and introspection or the self-importance that one often finds in more recent memoirs and autofiction。 。。。more

4。5 starsi have to think it through and then review it but as for now, one of the most beautiful novels I’ve read this year

Childhood: 4。25/5 Youth: 3/5 Dependency: 4/5A completely raw, unadorned, and brutally honest memoir of Danish writer/poet Tove Ditlevsen。 This was pretty agonizing and uncomfortable to read at times (mostly in Dependency when she writes about her battle with addiction), but still a beautiful and gripping narrative that will leave a lasting impression on you。

Ditlevsen and her translator have a direct, appealing style, but she also possesses a solipsism that can only partially be explained by the addiction to which she falls victim in the third book。 It is rather more likely that her solipsistic personality made her susceptible to addiction。

A strange book… It took me a long time to get into it, the first 2 books felt like an artifact from another time which I enjoyed as a window into what life was like in Denmark in the 30s but I couldn’t latch onto anything beyond that/greater than that。 Then the addiction bit arrived fast & furious & horrifying。 The pace picked up there but something still struck me as off or not honest or missing… she descended so far so fast and for reasons that felt obscured to me… like there was more going on A strange book… It took me a long time to get into it, the first 2 books felt like an artifact from another time which I enjoyed as a window into what life was like in Denmark in the 30s but I couldn’t latch onto anything beyond that/greater than that。 Then the addiction bit arrived fast & furious & horrifying。 The pace picked up there but something still struck me as off or not honest or missing… she descended so far so fast and for reasons that felt obscured to me… like there was more going on than I could see, or something was missing in terms of the mechanics of the thing。 300 pages of plodding ordinary life, 70 of abrupt horror。 I feel lame for wanting more of an arc, more transparency in motivations, wanting this to conform to some literary formula or be something other than it was。 But I did。 。。。more

I read this after reading a NYT review - having never heard of the author and subject, was not sure what to expect。 Utterly fascinating - educating snapshot of time and place and still entertaining and easy to read。 I feel I have bettered myself in some way by reading this trilogy。 Highly recommend, esp。 for memoir readers。

Sarah Ahmad

blunt and heartbreaking, especially knowing that Ditlevsen never recovered from her illness。

What a powerful story, told through benign moments, youthful longings, a passion for writing, and addiction。

Interesting, beautifully written, but I have trouble with translations。

The audiobook is awfully narrated and I fear distorted my perception of the memoir。 Sometimes simple language works great to amplify the story, but in this case I felt like the author was leaving me outside in the cold (and the happy voice narrating with the same intonation everything, from happy events to abortion and addiction made me feel even more disconnected)。 The childhood part didn't feel very compelling but the story picked up for me when the author starts trying to get her works publis The audiobook is awfully narrated and I fear distorted my perception of the memoir。 Sometimes simple language works great to amplify the story, but in this case I felt like the author was leaving me outside in the cold (and the happy voice narrating with the same intonation everything, from happy events to abortion and addiction made me feel even more disconnected)。 The childhood part didn't feel very compelling but the story picked up for me when the author starts trying to get her works published and especially once she enters addiction。 Those were the parts where I felt I understood the author。 。。。more

This is a brutal, eloquent, and candid memoir。 However, this was definitely the wrong time of year to read it。 Good lord, was it sad at times。

Tove Ditlevsen’s struggle through poverty, a lonely intellectual, reminds me of the characters in Ferrante’s novels。 She was not widely accepted and appreciated in her time, not even by us in Denmark, but now we can see how awesome she is。
